Michael is in town with his family over Christmas, so it has been a good time to break out the cyclocross bike so we can pummel one another over break. In the summer, its road bikes, now it tends to be cx bikes in the winter. Both times he's schooled me, but that's what I expected.
Oh, and he's riding a rigid mtn. bike to boot. We set up a course over by the ROTC tower.

Ode to the Reverend
Reverend just had some serious knee surgery, but I know that he will come back even stronger. Check out what they had to do to his knee--its one of the most gnarly things I've ever heard of.
The thing is--the Reverend is one of the best bike riders in mid-Missouri, and nothing is going to keep him down. Hang in there!

The 1980s
I hate to harp on and on about how great cycling was in the 1980s, but watching those videos on youtube totally takes me back to a bygone era. I find it fascinating that the American renaissance in cycling has now been going on for over 20 years, arguably when Eddie B. took over as head coach of the national team in 1980 or 1981. I would argue, also, that this is when a culture of doping started to insinuate itself into the scene.
A story: I had a friend who was a junior in the mid 1980s--he was national caliber, I wasn't, and he was from New Mexico. He was just a really good kid who listened to lots of heavy metal and just happened to be incredibly fast on a bike. To make a long story short--he ended up on the national team in 1987 and 1988 and ended up getting hepatitis over in Europe. There aren't many ways you can get hepatitis aside from intravenous needles and a couple of other ways of transmission that I'm sure everyone knows about but I won't get into. It effectively ruined his career, and I think he quit cycling forever, sold his bikes, etc. Its the same shit that happened to Grewal when Peter Post was forcing vitamin injections and who knows what else on him in 1985. He got completely screwed over by Panasonic and Post sounded like a notorious hardass (Read A Peiper's Tale by Allan Peiper).
I wonder--did the rise of American cycling correspond directly with the insinuation of doping into the cycling culture? Was it just a coincidence? The blood doping scandal of the 1984 Olympics--I still believe that this was the tip of the iceberg in what was going on in the nascent days of the American cycling ascendancy.
Its still the most beautiful sport in the world . . .

youtube and misc
I can't get enough of watching cycling videos on youtube, especially Classics from the 1980s that someone from California is posting the last 9 minutes of. Sweet.
We have all been sick around here for the past few days, Lucy running a pretty high fever, and I slept most of the weekend. In fact, I've hardly done anything over the last few weeks, aside from lose weight, which is an odd combination. I did some thinking about my time away from cycling in my early 20s the last few days. Back when I looked like a member of the Screaming Trees and spent a good part of my time in Idaho and Alaska; sandwiched between dissipation at Truman State. I'm not sure why, but I constantly dream at night about Alaska. There were some crazy f'ers up there. The bears weren't half as dangerous as the people who inhabited the local bars.
In other news, my good friend The Reverend just had major knee surgery in what was going to be his breakthrough cyclocross season. I feel really bad for him--but I think he'll be back next year stronger than ever.

Snake Alley

I noticed that prozenberger is posting some Snake Alley pictures and that is getting me all excited to try and do the race next season. I can't promise anything, and I doubt I'll do many other road races next year, but I'd love to finish that race.
This is me off the front a few years ago in the Cat. 3 race. Yep.

New Jersey Pine Barrens. Jan 1993

No, I hadn't ridden in three and a half years. I was on vacation from my job in Alaska, where I worked with Boss Hogg's nephew building trails. I listened to Tad.
