The Hard Road
I watched this on Friday night, after drinking a few beers. Kelly and Lucy had already gone to bed, and the Winter Olympics opening ceremony was over, and I've been thinking about my bike racing days again, wistfully.
"The Hard Road" was written and produced and edited by Jamie Paolinetti, who has been around for a long time (I remember him being on the National Track team in the 1980s.) The thing I noticed about all those guys on the NetZero team in 2001, except for the New Zealanders--they were all big guys! I mean, Mike Tillman was fat! Yeah, he was mainly best at track, but its crazy how beefy those dudes were/are. I have to lose tons of muscle and be down around 175, which is crazy skinny for me, to be a good Cat. 3. All these guys were closer to 200, I'd say.
Anyway, it was inspiring to watch it. I'm not sure how people do it, maintain upper body muscle and still be good cyclists, but I guess its possible.

Eric Saunders
He posted this on a message board a few years ago. It speaks volumes about how I feel about the doping issue. And, WHY do the police in Europe treat doping cyclists like Heroin dealers?
i am erik saunders... my name is ERIK SAUNDERS... i have a website... its called erik saunders.com....drugs suck, duh... i laugh at all those guys trying to break through over there banging their heads against the wall...then i have to hear from some cat 3s about how the US pros arent good and we cant compete with the europeans... one of these days people will start to get it- the more they fry dudes like doper dave millar...he isnt a bad person, or a cheater in my eyes... he just looks like an idiot after all that has been said and all that has happened... i feel sorry for him a bit... and a bit not... and then after that i dont too much care...the truth is the truth... ok... but i dont like the french justice system where they can string you up like they do over some stupid BS like doping... there is an arrogance about the way they are doing this all that bothers me...believe me, there are a lot of other things that they could be doing with their time and over reaching power than going after poor millar for taking epo.. they are definetely having fun with this... i am glad i dont live in france where the cops can pull you over or take you in for no reason at all pretty much...there should be testing and sanctions and i dont think that they should do less to keep things honest... i just object to the french modus operandi...anyway- doping is such a big problem... bike racing is stupid anyway- lets not get carried away about the relative importance of cycling in the grand scheme... its just a big self- gratifying ego-fest... no dopers are taking away your chance to get to heaven... millar took epo... do you loose sleep at night?... does it keep your kids from a quality education?... does it stop you family from eating?... bike racing will still exist... the 30 plusers will still want to race in the industrial parks of southern california... dont worry... then i can race with them since pro cycling will die and i wont have a team anymore... i will have just as much fun...

Bike racing career over?
As I think about this upcoming season, the world of bike racing seems like a universe away. I went out thinking that I was going to do an hour long ride on Sunday, and turned around after 7 minutes, thinking “this is just NOT what I want to be doing right now.” I guess that not only do I have the time, I really don't care that much anymore.
How do people with young kids train for USCF races, especially Category 3 and above? Either they are unusually fit and talented, or they sacrifice family time, that's all there is to it. Running just takes so much less time . . . . .
Nonetheless, I think once the weather gets warm I will want to ride again. At least, I hope so.
